Do you remember the saying “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”? This isn’t just important in the real world. It matters for your social media channels, too! Instagram’s 5oo million daily users make it a great way to get build your unique brand to reach new customers, but you want to make sure you’re creating the impression you really want. This week’s Social Media Monday will show you how to with your Instagram bio.
If you’re new to Instagram, you know how intimidating it can be to break onto the scene. This can be especially true when creating an account for your new UnFranchise business! It might be daunting to think about how you can make your mark and set yourself apart from such a large crowd, but the devil might just be in the details.
Before you start thinking up ideas, you need to understand the components that structure your profile.
This is what will appear in bold at the top of your Instagram profile, and is also included in keyword searches on the platform. Thankfully, Instagram gives you 30 characters to play around with! Of course, you’ll include your brand’s name, but adding highly-searched keywords describing your page’s focus (Saturday Night Live – SNL) is a great path to a memorable name.
This is also called your “handle” and, yes, it is different than the name of your profile. This is what will follow the “@” at the beginning of each post + comment you make, so it’s just as important as your name! If you have other social media pages for your business, it’s a good idea to keep this as close to your other handles as you can. This makes it easier for your customers to find you across platforms + tag you across multiple platforms at once!
This is the only place on Instagram where you can post your clickable UnFranchise link. You can change it whenever you’d like which makes it easy to link to your specific shop, latest blog post, or a special campaign you’re hosting!
Now, this is what you came for. While everything else is important, this is your chance to explain what your page is all about while letting your unique voice and branding shine! You’ve only got 150 characters so this will take a little creativity.
Writing Your Bio
With all of your basic elements in place, it’s finally time to tackle the bio. There are so many ways to make your 150 characters express your brand in a unique way!
For some, emojis are a little too new and might feel a bit cutesy for a brand. But, the evidence shows differently! Major brands like Motives Cosmetics + SHOP.COM include emojis with great success!
When you’re dealing with a restricted character count, the right emoji can tell followers more about your brand than you could with words alone. It’s also a good way to highlight a fun-loving side if it fits into your branding!
2. Show What Makes You Special
With so many brands + products online, it’s easy to blend into the masses. The good news is that no one knows your brand better than you! It’s up to you to get that message to your visitors + potential customers. Why is Isotonix better than your grocery store vitamin? What makes DNA Miracles better than chemical-filled kids’ products that line the shelves? This is your chance to explain why visitors should pay attention + show that you have something new + genuine to offer!
3. Use Branded Hashtags
Depending on what your major is, you’ll have different hashtags you use for each brand! For example, Isotonix uses #isotonix, Motives Cosmetics uses #motives, and TLS uses #TLSweightloss. Why? Because your users who don’t know you don’t trust your brand yet! Seeing others interact with and enjoying your brand’s products is a great way to build trust and assure them that you’re not one of the hundreds of online scammers out there.
This is also a great place for a call-to-action! This is exactly what it sounds like. Tell your visitors to post under the hashtag you’ve listed to add some great user-generated content to your feed or ask them to click on your link to shop!
