Motives Maven Spotlight: Maryam Maquillage from @maryamnyc

The Motives Mavens are a group of some of the most talented makeup artists in the world, with a reach of over 10 million followers collectively! They’ve embraced the Motives Cosmetics brand and helped us with our endeavors to share Motives with the world! This week, we are honored to have Motives Maven Maryam Maquillage from @maryamnyc chat with us about her experiences as a makeup artist (mua) and a Motives Maven. Read on to find out her story!

Tell us a bit about yourself!
Hi everyone! My name is Maryam and I am a beauty blogger at
MaryamMaquillage.com (my name + “Makeup” in French). I specialize in makeup looks, hand-painted nail art, tutorials, as well as product reviews, and provide
daily beauty tips and makeup inspiration on my social media channels.

When did you know a career in beauty was for you? How did you get started?
Subconsciously, I’d probably known it since I was about 3 years old. I watched
my mom and aunts put on their makeup and wished nothing more than to be
able to apply it myself. Subsequently, I ended up pursuing the arts and following
the footsteps of my parents, both of whom are artists. It was during my teenage
years spent at NYC’s La Guardia Performing Arts High School that I started to
really experiment with art in terms of makeup, using my face as my canvas and
cosmetics as my medium. Years down the road and with a lot of encouragement
from friends, I started my beauty blog in Jan 2011. Once it took off, I knew that
there was no turning back and a career in beauty is exactly what I was destined
for. I quit my day job and focused solely on this beauty venture. Today, my
partner Lee and I, dedicate most of our days running and managing
MaryamMaquillage.com and our Social Media outlets.

Do you have a specific area of expertise?
I pride myself in being a sort-of “beauty chameleon” and love to try on just about
anything. I go through phases where all I want to do is wear character looks and
experiment with makeup-art like recreating the sheet music of my favorite
Michael Jackson song on my lids or painting tiny portraits of my siblings on my
nails. These looks are generally a reflection of my personality and are meant to
ignite a creative spark / inspire my audience to step outside of the norm. Other
times, I’m all about the ready-to-wear, flattering, beautiful makeup that helps
women feel good. Most of my pictorials and YouTube tutorials are based on
such looks and are very popular with my subscribers and followers.

Where do you gather inspiration for new looks?
I am hugely inspired by nature, people and different cultures – I love to travel and whenever I return home, my head is always filled with fresh, new ideas for looks.
My parents are another major inspiration; my mom is an artist who specializes in
textiles and her color sense is out of this world! My dad, on the other hand, is a
poster artist who really inspires me graphically. On a daily basis, I’m inspired by
my fellow bloggers, the true trendsetters of beauty and fashion. Each one of
them is unique, different and has a special voice that I can’t help but listen to.

For our viewers at home, what is the one beauty tip that you could give that many of them may not know about?
Don’t underestimate the power of red lipstick. The right red can make any
woman look more beautiful, seductive, and feminine, as well as younger and
even skinnier!! Find your perfect red and wear it proudly!

How were you introduced to Motives?
I was introduced to Motives by my dear friend Milly Almodovar. Milly happens to
know a thing or two about good products and wouldn’t stop raving about
Motives!! She is the beauty editor for Cosmopolitan for Latinas, a fellow beauty
blogger, and one of my closest friends!

What three Motives Cosmetics items should no woman leave home without?
1. Motives liquid liner in Noir – this liquid liner has the tiniest brush applicator
and is extremely versatile. I use it to sharpen the edges of my cat eye, and
to draw tiny “lash extensions” on my bottom lash line.
2. Motives lip crayon in Naked or Neutral – this pencil liner has the best
consistency and is perfect for carrying around in your purse for every day
nude lips.
3. Motives for Lala Color Perfection Quad – the most essential thing for your
skin makeup needs! This baby conceals, perfects, highlights and
contours, plus the formula is smooth, velvety and suitable for most skin
types.

If you could only have one Motives Cosmetics item, which one would you pick?
Easy! I would pick The Present by Scott Barnes for Motives – it’s a gorgeous
conveniently sized compact that includes everything one would need for a full
face makeup… and me – I gotta have it all!

Do you have a trademark look?
Although I like to dab into a little bit of everything, I tend to favor graphic,
creative liner looks. I love to play with my eye shape and accentuate certain
details over others.

What are your favorite Winter 2013 beauty trends?
Glitter, glitter, more glitter and glitter galore! I am currently obsessing over the
graphic, exotic cat eye liner + glitter combinations and can’t wait to show you
how to put this trend to use in my next live feed on MeetOn.com! Join me on
