As members of the Market America social media team, we’re on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Google+ all day, every day. In addition to posting great content and responding to comments, we spend a lot of time observing the conversation happening all around us. Throughout the day, we sometimes come across well-intentioned posts shared by our fans and followers that “miss the mark” so to speak. So today, we’re sharing three very common social media mistakes UnFranchise Owners make, plus tips for making a quick fix.
Mistake #1: Being an “egghead” on Twitter
We love receiving tweets and retweets from UnFranchise Owners all across the globe, but one thing that makes us die a little inside (ok, that’s a little dramatic, but hear me out) is when we see an awesome tweet from an egghead. What’s an egghead? It’s the default image Twitter assigns to users who fail to upload a photo. Come on, guys! Why would you invest even a moment of your time into Twitter if you don’t even have a profile photo?! A profile photo shows the world who you are, and tells them that no, you are not a spambot or an uncommitted Twitter user. So please, before you send out one more tweet, upload a picture of yourself. 🙂
Mistake #2: Sharing tons (and tons and tons) of posts in a row from our Facebook page
While it is in our best interest to encourage fans to share posts from our Facebook pages (it helps boost our numbers and overall reach dramatically!), we’re much more invested in you than anything else. So, that being said, we need to put a stop to those who are sharing tons (i.e. more than three at a time) posts from our page in a row onto their own profile page. And not only that, but sharing tons of posts from our page without including a caption. Why? Because it’s not doing you any favors! Think about it: by sharing multiple posts from our Facebook pages at one time, you’re inundating your friends with content that is all related to one thing – our page. Content that, without a caption (which must be written by you before you hit “share”) holds little to no meaning to them. Don’t get us wrong, sharing posts from our page can be extremely effective when done correctly. So next time, be choosy and only share 1-2 at a time, and remember to include a caption to give the shared post some context.
Mistake #3: Only sharing reposts on Instagram
Reposting other people’s photos on Instagram using an app like Repost App can be a great way to share good content and give kudos to those who post awesome pics. However, if you only share reposts onto your profile (meaning: you don’t upload any original photos or videos) you’re wasting your time. Again, reposts are a fantastic way to spice up what you already post on Instagram, but a profile that consists 99.9% of reposts is unappealing to current and potential followers. Why would they follow you, when they can just go follow the people you repost from? Give people a reason to follow you by sharing unique content created by you. This means taking and uploading your own photos from business events, family outings, trips with friends, and general day-to-day happenings. This means taking videos of cool things you notice or exciting things you experience and posting them on your profile with a killer caption. Your life and your experiences are unique to you, so don’t be afraid to show them off via a captivating pic or a video that “says it all” on Instagram!
These are just a few of the mistakes we’ve seen well-intentioned UnFranchise Owners make while using social media to build their business. Luckily, there’s an easy fix to each of these, and we hope that you’ll put them into practice ASAP!
