Social Media Monday: Don’t Make One Of These Three Mistakes!

A few weeks ago, we posted this blog post about the mistakes UnFranchise Owners make when using social media to build their business, and then followed it up with this blog post. You guys loved these posts so much we’re adding a third one to the mix today! Read on for three more mistakes we’ve seen you guys (yes, that means YOU!) make on social media, plus quick and easy fixes for each.

Mistake #1: Trying to tag a person using the hashtag (#) symbol instead of the mention (@) symbol.

When trying to tag someone on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, we’ve seen a few of you use the hashtag (#) symbol instead of the mention (@) symbol. For example, let’s say you want to tag your friend Sally Jones in a post on Facebook. Instead of, “Wow, I love this picture of #SallyJones I took at our Halloween party!” the correct way to tag Sally Jones would be like this: @Sally Jones. When you attach the @ symbol to the beginning of a name, you’re telling Facebook that you’d like to tag one of your friends (note: you can also use this method to tag brand pages!). Once you finish typing their first name, make a space and begin typing their last name. Facebook will automatically populate a drop-down list of all your friends who have the same name. However, when using Twitter or Instagram, simply begin typing your friend’s Instagram or Twitter handle, and select it from the options that populate in the drop-down list.

Mistake #2: Posting links on social media without including a caption.

Posting links to YouTube videos, interesting articles, or even products on your portal is a great way to share awesome content with your friends and engage your online network. However, posting a link on your Facebook timeline or Twitter profile without a caption about why you’re sharing it will only make your friends ignore you. Instead, take 30 seconds to type up a caption to let your friends know why they should check out the link you’re sharing – regardless of what kind of content it is! For example, if you feel like posting a link to Isotonix OPC-3, type up a short caption about how it’s changed your life! Did you come across an inspirational blog post you want to share with the world? Before hitting “share,” give your friends a preview by posting a thought-provoking quote from the article in the caption. Did someone send you a hilarious cat video that made you die laughing? Yes, even the content you share that isn’t business related needs a caption, so tell your friends why it made you laugh or simply that they have to watch it!

Mistake #3: Failing to include a link to your SHOP.COM portal on your Instagram profile.

Did you know that the only clickable link you can post on Instagram is the one that goes in the “website” portion of your profile? This means that if you’re using Instagram to build your business or share your favorite products, you must include a link to your portal in your profile. When you include your portal link in your profile, you are then able to refer friends and potential customers to that link if they ask questions about specific products featured in your photos and videos.

These are just a few of the mistakes we’ve seen well-intentioned UnFranchise Owners make while using social media to build their business. Luckily, there’s an easy fix to each of these, and we hope that you’ll put them into practice ASAP! If you have questions or comments about any of the points in this article, let us know by posting in the comment section below.
