Happy Halloween! Chances are you’ll be eating just a little too much candy and, honestly, who can blame you? As delicious as it is, go a little too hard on the Halloween candy and you’re likely to end up with a sugar hangover that can get in the way of your spooky fun. Here’s what’s happening in your body after you’ve dived into the candy mountain – and a few things you can do to help soothe your stomach after a sugar overload!
Your Body on Sugar
No matter what candy you reach for, you’re taking in more sugar than your body is used to processing. Specifically, sucrose – a simple sugar with a high-glycemic-index that gives you a hit of sugar fast.
The sugar rush feels great at first, but it doesn’t last.
The sudden jump in your blood sugar causes your body to release insulin which brings your blood sugar back down, sometimes a lover than your normal baseline. This low-blood sugar state is what we call a “sugar hangover” & it leaves you feeling sluggish & sleepy with an upset stomach. Not the best way to spend Halloween night, right?
What to Do After a Sugar Overload
Eat a Balanced Meal
A breakfast that’s high in protein, low in sugar, and includes healthy fats is really helpful after a sugar overload. Try a veggie omelet topped with avocado or a plant protein power bowl with black beans, tofu, and salsa! Need a little more inspiration? Head over to the TLS® Blog!
If you drink coffee with breakfast, make sure to skip the sugar and sugary creamers or opt for one of the teas below.
Swap Your Coffee for Tea
If you’re normally a coffee drinker, today might be the day to change things up. The high acidity can easily upset an already not-so-happy stomach, so try one of these teas after a sugar overload instead:
- Peppermint Tea
- Chamomile Tea
- Fennel Tea
- Mint Tea
- Rice Tea
You can also use your TLS® Trim Tea if you’d like!
Take Your Digestive Enzymes & Probiotics
Sugar doesn’t do great things to your gut, so replenishing its digestive enzymes & probiotics is important! Probiotics provide beneficial bacteria to promote healthy digestion, stomach comfort, and support a healthy GI tract.* Digestive Enzymes come in to add additional support for healthy digestion & help tackle stomach discomfort and bloating.*
Pretty great, right?
