National Stress Awareness Day

On every first Wednesday of November, we nationally celebrate Stress Awareness Day. The purpose of this day is to remind you to stop stressing; especially over things that are out of your control! In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, chronic stress is linked to the six leading causes of death. Stress clouds the mind and impairs the way you think. It can also affect you physically. Here are five ways to destress to help you live a happier, longer life.

1. Meditation

Life can be stressful. Sometimes the best way to take care of your mental health is to pause. Resting your mind from your thoughts and to-do list can be just enough to make you feel more grounded. There are tons of studies that support meditation as a proper way to manage stress. This is your sign to start a meditation practice. If you are a beginner, you can download a meditation app or search for guided meditation online.

2. Laughter

Laughter is so healing and it’s a great way to relieve stress. Laughter not only helps brighten your mood, but also sends signals to your brain to bring more oxygen to your organs, reduce your stress response, and relax your muscles.

3. Breathwork

Breathwork is an amazing tool you can use anywhere and at any time. When you take a deep breath, it sends a signal to your brain to relax. There are so many breathwork exercises out there to help you reduce stress, it’s a matter of finding your favorite ones!

4. Time with Nature

Spending time outdoors helps you get out of your mind and relieve stress. Whether it is a stroll around your neighborhood or just a step outside the office for some fresh air, it is important to spend time outside. There are studies that help with high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

5. Hands-on Activities

Let’s get crafty! Hands-on activities, like cooking, painting, or gardening, are another amazing way to get out of your mind and focus on something positive and calming. For instance, cooking engages all your senses. Not only can the action of cooking be therapeutic, but so can the smell and taste. Hands-on activities can help you relax your mind. So pick up a relaxing hobby or a coloring book of your choice.

I hope these five ways to relieve stress brighten up your day. Take care of your mental health, it’s a priority!
