With the rising temperatures and outdoor activities that accompany the onset of spring, it is important to give some thought to skin care. Warmer weather and time spent outside typically means more exposed skin – thus, we must take the time to make sure our skin is ready for springtime. Pamper your skin for a beautiful spring look with these tips and recommendations:

Moisturizing Magic: Cold outdoor air means layers of clothing, electric heat and low humidity, which equals dry, dull, older-looking skin that hasn’t seen the light of day in months. To bounce back from winter dryness, a good moisturizer is essential. While this should be part of your daily skincare regimen already, it is especially important at this season change, as it is more likely that it has been ignored with the donning of sweaters and long pants. Look for high quality moisturizers with natural ingredients and botanicals that will be gentle on the skin. Don’t forget about your body! Spots like heels, elbows and ankles are especially in need of attention after a long, dry winter. It’s amazing how a quick moisturizing self-treatment can boost your spirits and your confidence!

Exhilarating Exfoliation: Buffing away dry, dead skin and revealing smooth, refreshed skin is a rejuvenating way to welcome the beautiful spring weather. Many people like to exfoliate their skin in the spring to prepare for getting a healthy warm-weather glow. Whatever your reason for exfoliating is, it is very important to do it properly. When exfoliating the face, it is crucial to use a gentle exfoliant. Exfoliating scrubs that contain harsh ingredients like apricot pits can be very damaging to the delicate skin on the face, causing microscopic tears that will only make skin concerns worse. Instead, opt for exfoliants with gentle ingredients and natural extracts like aloe vera and chamomile that will gently buff away dead skin without causing irritation.

Don’t Skip the Sunscreen: Spring is the perfect time to get outside. It’s often bright and warm but not overly hot. When the weather isn’t scorching, many people often forget to protect their skin with sunscreen. This is a dangerous mistake. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating (skincancer.org).
