How many hours of sleep are you getting at night? Studies suggest that at least 8 hours of restful sleep are required for the body to function at its best during the day. According to WedMD, here are some consequences of sleep deprivation: decreased performance and alertness, memory and cognitive impairment, stress relationships, poor quality of life, increased possibility of occupational injury and automobile injury. If we are sleep deprived, our health can suffer.
According to a study completed at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, people who get less than seven hours of sleep at night have a three times higher risk of catching a cold than people who sleep eight hours or more.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania studied 153 people by documenting their sleep habits for two weeks and then administered nasal drops that contained the cold-causing rhinovirus. They were interviewed over a two week period to discuss their sleeping patterns and discovered that the less that people slept, the more likely they were to develop a cold. According to researchers, “A possible explanation for the link between sleep and cold susceptibility was “that sleep disturbance influences the regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, histamines and other symptom mediators that are released in response to infection.”
